When talking about DoFollow and NoFollow it is related to link building or in other words creating backlinks. Link building is an important part of SEO or in other words Search Engine Optimization. Before we talk about DoFollow and NoFollow links, let us understand first what is backlinking.

Understanding What is Backlink

Backlinks are the external links from different websites pointing to your website or blog. Backlinking or the number of websites pointing to your blog or website is one of the most important google ranking factor because mostly low quality website(mostly are spam) and not a serious webmaster do not consistently do backlinks or trying to improve their SEO because they are not passionate on managing a website or a blog and Google wants to deliver high quality search results and popular website are the best option to show in front of the millions of google search users. And DoFollow and NoFollow has something to do with this.

What is DoFollow and NoFollow

This video is not my own. Credits to the owner. This video is for demonstration purposes only. Enjoy watching:

When you create a link anywhere in your blog or in other website, usually it looks like this:

<a href="">Cyfrus Support</a>

If a link has no tag of NoFollow that look like the above sample, that is a DoFollow link. And a NoFollow link will look like this:

<a href"" rel="nofollow">Cyfrus Support</a>

The part that defines a DoFollow and a NoFollow is the rel="nofollow". If you take that out, it will automatically becomes a DoFollow link.

If a blog or a website doesn't use NoFollow tag, search engines acknowledge that website and if the website doesn't use NoFollow it will result to the opposite.

To make it easy for you to understand. If a site with high pagerank links to you,  Google increases your authority but it must be a DoFollow link pointing to your website. NoFollow links may not increase your website's ranking because it's a NoFollow link, but it still can be use to drive traffic to your blog. Base on my understanding, a DoFollow link is a vote for popularity and NoFollow is just a referral link to pass traffic to your blog without boosting your site ranking.

Both DoFollow and NoFollow has its own benefit. Most blogs and websites today do not allow DoFollow links because they want to avoid bloggers and marketers spamming their links to their websites. But there are still blogs and websites that still allows DoFollow link and you just need to look for it.

Base on my observation,  most dofollow links are obtain through guest posting, mentioning on blog post and paid links, it's up to you if you want to invest on paid links or not in exchange for boosting your pagerank.
